What is Junior Trader

Junior Trader offers undergraduates and Y12–13 students access to a real time stock picking experience in a team environment. It is addictive, competitive, and even approved as a DofE Skill.

Junior Trader offers schools, universities and financial institutions a structured approach to financial education, a field lacking from the curriculum.

Since 2008, Junior Trader has helped many alumni gain a valuable edge when applying for university places, internships, and careers, even beyond the world of finance. It is a highly regarded experience to feature on personal statements, CVs, and in interviews.

How it works

Session 1: The programme kicks off with a fast-paced introduction to graduate roles in the City, followed by a simulation of equities research and trading. Students form teams and compete in a stock-picking challenge.

Session 2: A deeper dive into “What Moves a Share Price” builds participants’ analytical skills, helping them construct a balanced portfolio of retail investments informed by real-world economic conditions.

Final Task: Each team submits a written report explaining their investment choices. Completion of this task earns students a Certificate of Attendance (and the DofE Skill recognition if applicable).

Guided Walks and JT+

Schools in the South East might prefer to conduct these lectures in the City and on foot visit the famous coffee shops and exchanges where it all began whilst debunking financial jargon and receiving the JT lectures.

JT+ is our more advanced module, and a DofE Gold Skill “Share Trading” This is an individual exercise over 8-10 weeks.

Community Interest

As a non-profit, we support state schools and schools that are charities with a bursary scheme with access to JT and discounted places to JT+. These sessions are laid on thanks to the help of our corporate sponsors, many of whom provide access to the JT alumni for in person sessions.

Get ahead!

Spring Weeks, Internships and Grad Schemes are a crowded space. The JT schemes are designed to help you understand the roles available in the City, to debunk jargon, and to level the playing-field from a diversity perspective.

Formative Learning

The aims of the competition are 1. to give real world work experience 2. improve diversity in financial markets and 3. to give students a taste of working as a team towards a goal.

Join Us

Through this competition, JT’s aim is to improve the diversity of finance applicants, helping unlock doors into the City for as many students as possible in lieu of rare work experience placements.
